Erasmus Student Network Vilnius University

Erasmus Student Network Vilnius University - VU SR program promoting student mobility and helping international students to integrate into Vilnius University. The oldest and largest section of ESN Lithuania.ESN is one of the largest international student associations in Europe, uniting more than 500 universities. ESN Vilnius University officially became a part of this organization in 2003 and since then the members in Vilnius and Kaunas have been actively working to facilitate the integration of exchange students in our country. Since 2015, ESN Vilnius University is a structural unit of VU SR.The main goal of ESN Vilnius University is to help foreign students arriving to Vilnius University to adapt to the new environment, to get acquainted with the study procedure, culture and traditions of our country. ESN Vilnius University mentors - over 100 student volunteers providing academic and practical support to colleagues from more than 60 countries around the world.ESN has given me a lot. I was a very shy girl at the beginning and had a hard time communicating with people, but after 2 years I have learnt a lot - it is no longer scary to start a conversation with someone, I have had the opportunity to improve my English, and I have learnt Spanish and Korean. I have met a lot of important and dear people from different countries. For example, when I was in Japan, I stayed with my former mentor and was able to see the country from a different perspective. ESN has helped me to grow as a person and to have a stronger foundation for travelling to other countries.Laima Jonuševičiūtė, VU studentESN Vilnius University goes beyond the mentoring programme - volunteers also have the opportunity to contribute to the organisation of events and trips, to try their hand at human resources, information technology, public relations committees and to gain experience in project management or partner recruitment. Members of the programme can represent Vilnius University at national events and serve as Lithuanian representatives at international congresses. The effectiveness of the programme's diverse activities is also demonstrated by significant recognition. ESN Vilnius University boasts a large circle of partners and close cooperation with them.My biggest regret about graduating from the University this year is not that I missed a few lectures or did not learn everything. My biggest regret is that I came to ESN Vilnius University only in my third year and not before.Julija Daubaraitė, student at the Faculty of Economics and Business administration, Vilnius UniversityIf you are open to new ideas, have unique and unrealized ideas, or want to experience different cultures without leaving your home country, join ESN Vilnius University! Mentor program

The Mentor Program is a project implemented by VU SR in which senior student volunteers help first-year students smoothly integrate into university life. You can find the list of mentors here. After completing special training, mentors introduce new students to the study process and VU traditions, help them deal with academic and social matters, and provide all the information they may need after starting their studies. The idea, which originated at Vilnius University Students’ Representation in 2000, later spread to other higher education institutions in Lithuania.“Becoming a mentor was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Invaluable experience, many wonderful people and new connections, the best first-year student camp and the most memorable summer.”Gabrielė Stanionytė, first-year student mentor at the VU Faculty of PhysicsEven before the beginning of the academic year, new students are invited to participate in first-year student camps organised by mentors from each VU SR unit. These are followed by informal meetings where first-year students get to know their fellow students and lecturers and learn about the study process, the structure of their faculty, centre or institute, financial support and extracurricular opportunities. The program’s partner, Vilnius University Library, organises information weeks for first-year students, introducing new members of the academic community to the services offered by the Library and organising tours of the Scholarly Communication and Information Centre (MKIC) and the Central Library.Mentors also contribute to the planning and smooth implementation of Integration Week. Integration Week is a Vilnius University-wide project that has been running since 2018 and aims to help first-year students integrate into the University and its environment. First-year students participate in various lectures and activities, visit the VU Library, and learn about other VU services and opportunities, while mentors help ensure that the events taking place throughout the week run smoothly.According to survey data from the 2018 Integration Week, more than 90% of the first-year students surveyed said that mentors were helpful and assisted them in resolving various issues they encountered.“It is great that Vilnius University has a Mentor Program that helps you feel more confident and comfortable from your very first days. The friendly faces not only answered our questions but also introduced us to how the University works, helped us become part of university life and left us with many wonderful memories!”Enrika Vyčaitė, first-year student at the VU Faculty of Chemistry and GeosciencesWould you like to become a mentor and help students in your study programme successfully take their first steps at the University? No Labels Program

No Labels Program is a VU SR program established in 2010 and actively working to reduce social exclusion and promote human rights. The program aims to challenge stereotypes prevalent in society, promote the full integration of socially vulnerable groups and foster respectful relationships within the Vilnius University community. Its core values are equality, openness and respect for each person’s individuality. No Labels Program is active in several areas. One of them focuses on socially vulnerable groups and encompasses various social movements and issues, including feminism, equality for the LGBTQ+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people), the fight against racism and xenophobia, and other social issues. Informal meetings are organised to help create a safe space for marginalised people at Vilnius University, while lectures, discussions and other events are used to educate people both within and outside the University.“I have been involved in the VU LGBT+ group, a branch of No Labels Program, for one year. Since our meetings are quite frequent and regular, during this time I have had the opportunity to meet many interesting, intelligent and fun people, some of whom have become my close friends. I am very happy that everyone is welcome in this group regardless of their status at the University – whether you are a first-year student, a PhD student or a lecturer at the beginning of your career.”Darja Lyzenko, lecturer at the VU Gender Studies CentreNo Labels Program also runs the photography project “Faces of VU”, which aims to highlight the individuality of Vilnius University students, lecturers and alumni. Photographs of members of the University community, accompanied by short interviews, are published on the No Labels Program Facebook page. The program also places significant emphasis on students’ emotional well-being. Through various activities, it seeks to encourage people to take care of their mental health and to reduce the stigma surrounding topics related to emotional well-being.No Labels Program considers it important to speak openly about the challenges faced by socially vulnerable groups. Over the years, the program has organised Human Library events, workshops and film nights. It has also participated in Pride marches for several years, expressing support for the values of openness, acceptance and self-expression in Lithuania. Representatives of No Labels Program are often invited to share their experience on various human rights issues with both Vilnius University students and the wider public.“I am very grateful to No Labels Program because being involved in this program allows me to feel like myself. It is a great place at the University where I can meet like-minded people and others who face similar challenges, who can offer support and contribute to creating a more tolerant environment at Vilnius University. Being part of this program has made me much stronger emotionally because I finally realised that I am not alone and that, by coming together, we can truly achieve a lot. In fact, actively participating in this program was one of the reasons I recovered from depression, which I had struggled with for at least three years. Today, I can feel comfortable here, study and work for the well-being of everyone. I am truly happy to be part of No Labels Program and to contribute to creating a better tomorrow for all of us!”Student at the VU Institute of International Relations and Political ScienceIf you want to contribute to social progress at Vilnius University and beyond, organise memorable events, meet students from other VU faculties and human rights activists from non-governmental organisations, become part of No Labels Program – everyone is welcome! The Student Civic Resistance Committee

The Student Civic Resistance Committee

A civic-minded alternative for students who care about national security. The Student Civic Resistance Committee (SPPK) is an organisation open to students across Lithuania. The Committee aims to educate students about civic resistance, motivate them to participate in activities related to civic resistance, cooperate with national defence institutions, and provide recommendations and proposals on how students can become more involved in civic resistance activities.SPPK seeks to provide information about different forms and opportunities for civic resistance, increase students’ and other individuals’ knowledge of non-violent forms of resistance, and foster a spirit of historical resilience by drawing on examples of resistance throughout Lithuanian history. The Committee’s distinctive character is reflected in its name – we seek to reach, inspire and engage in discussions with students and their communities. Lithuania’s defence preparedness encompasses many different fields, professions and groups. By involving students and bringing them closer to these areas, we believe that we contribute to the well-being and security of the country. By focusing specifically on students, SPPK has found its own niche and maintains its distinctive identity.SPPK is a young organisation, officially established in April 2024. Although the Committee will be able to showcase more of its achievements as its activities develop, several events and meetings already illustrate the nature of its work.SPPK has organised a public discussion aimed at VU students on national defence, its specific characteristics and its future, featuring Minister of National Defence Laurynas Kasčiūnas and VU Institute of International Relations and Political Science lecturer Dr Deividas Šlekys. The Committee also organises internal events designed to provide its members with more in-depth knowledge. These range from lectures on mobilisation and the role of students in the national defence system to more practical sessions introducing participants to military equipment and the fundamentals of emergency response. Clearly structured plans for future activities have also been developed. These will focus both on SPPK members and on students and other interested individuals more broadly, offering a combination of practical and theoretical activities.Leadership TeamThe Chair of the Committee is Gytis Oškelis, one of the first founders and developers of SPPK and a first-year Master’s student at the VU Institute of International Relations and Political Science. The Communications Representative is Augustė Jociunskė, an alumna of the VU Institute of International Relations and Political Science. Her responsibilities include ongoing communication, attracting new members, sharing and publishing news and information about events, and managing advertising.Kristijonas Ražickas is a communications specialist and tactical medicine enthusiast, while Giedrius Balinskas is responsible for coordinating details with speakers. Other SPPK members include VU alumni, Master’s students and committee members responsible for various organisational activities and their implementation. Most members of the leadership team have completed or are currently undertaking military service and have military training. More broadly, the entire leadership team is united by an interest in military and related topics and a desire to contribute to Lithuania’s security.Regular ActivitiesMost communication and planning takes place through social media platforms. In-person general meetings are held approximately once a month, although the schedule largely depends on the events being organised.Specific practical training sessions planned for the future may also take place on weekends, although such meetings are expected to be relatively rare. The duration of meetings depends on their nature. An activity may last anywhere from 45 minutes to half a day, although a typical meeting lasts approximately an hour and a half.Membership RequirementsIn principle, members must be students or alumni. In practice, a significant proportion of SPPK members are connected to Vilnius University, while many also have links to national defence, including former volunteers and graduates of the Military Academy. However, these are not mandatory requirements, nor are any specific qualifications required. Anyone with no previous knowledge who would like to learn more about national defence or military affairs is warmly invited to join. Students interested in SPPK can participate in the Committee’s activities and events. How to JoinAfter completing the membership form (https://forms.gle/YiC5GKVwrq7jdkBs7), the person responsible for membership adds the applicant to the SPPK Facebook group, provided that the form has been completed correctly and the relevant membership requirements have been met.Membership BenefitsMembers can develop their theoretical knowledge on a wide range of topics – from questions about what to do on “Day X” to recognising military equipment and participating in educational sessions, discussions and debates.SPPK also provides opportunities to develop practical skills, ranging from learning how to start a fire in a wet forest and properly pack a backpack to other practical skills that may be useful in the event of a military conflict. Activities may include hikes, outdoor training, physical preparation and opportunities to spend time with like-minded people.

VU Writers' Club

Revived this year, the VU Writers' Club brings together people who enjoy writing and reading. The Club also meets with writers and experiments with various writing games and activities. Welcoming international students into our community is also important to us!The aim of the VU Writers' Club is not only to bring together people who write, but also to encourage a deeper interest in literature and to explore it as an integral part of the arts by placing it within the context of the visual arts, music, theatre and cinema of different periods. The Club also seeks to explore literature from the perspectives of the writer, critic, reader and listener.Members of the VU Writers' Club organise open lectures on some of the most interesting literary movements and the most prominent figures in international and Lithuanian literature. The lectures explore the origins of works that were often considered highly controversial at the time of their publication and discuss their relevance today. Literature is presented in connection with philosophical thought, historical context and even the exact sciences when these have had a significant influence on a particular work or the ideas of its author.Club members also organise both public and private readings of their own work, arrange meetings with writers and write articles on literary topics. Once a month, the Club holds discussions focusing on a selected topic, literary works and an artistic movement. These discussions explore the works participants have read, their authors, literary and philosophical contexts, and relevant social issues. Film adaptations of the works are also discussed when available, along with the significance and relevance of the works today. This year, the Club also plans to organise literary debates and an orienteering event exploring locations in Vilnius that are significant to literature. The VU Writers' Club provides many opportunities for personal development, encourages freedom of self-expression, helps members overcome stage fright, and enables them to develop valuable skills in public relations, communication, organisation and marketing. You can find out more about the VU Writers' Club on its Facebook page, “VU Rašytojų klubas”, and on the Club’s blog. SMMS program

“Students for School Students, School Students for Students” (SMMS) is a three-day camp organised by VU SR for upper-secondary school students who want to experience student life and learn more about study opportunities. The project has been running since 2009 and aims to help school students discover their interests and future paths in both academic and extracurricular fields, develop their organisational, communication and leadership skills, and encourage cooperation between educational institutions, university students, alumni and school students.During the first stage of the project, the organising team develops a preliminary programme for the camp, which takes place in spring. Later, coordinators of different academic fields, working together with various institutions and organisations, add specific activities designed to help school students understand what students in particular study programmes actually learn or what people involved in different social and community activities do. At the same time, SMMS mentors who will look after the camp participants are selected. Volunteers take part in team-building training, helping them better understand the goals of the project and contribute to implementing the vision of SMMS.“During SMMS, I had a great opportunity to explore the University facilities, get answers to my most important questions about the study programmes I was interested in directly from second- and third-year students who already had experience and knew all the ins and outs of their studies. SMMS brought together a great group of interesting people my age who were eager to communicate, discuss and spend their time meaningfully, so the weekend was incredibly fun!”Monika Kiriejevaitė, student at the VU Faculty of Chemistry and GeosciencesDuring the second stage, motivated and ambitious school students are invited to join the project. Candidates who complete the selection tasks in the most creative way are selected to participate. The result is a camp that provides opportunities for development not only for school students but also for the university students organising it.Every year, “Students for School Students, School Students for Students” attracts increasing interest from both participants and partners. The VU SR project works closely with the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania, the Lithuanian Police, the National Student Academy and other organisations.“I participated in this project two years ago, but the emotions have stayed with me to this day. I do not even know how to describe this project – it is INCREDIBLY good! Being part of it helps you make new friends and meet university students who tell you about their studies. And they do not only talk about the challenges you face while studying, but also about the fun side of university life! Students explain that although studying sometimes requires hard work, it is only a small part compared with everything you can do at university in your free time. So it is definitely worth taking part!”Lukas Miežys, student at the VU Faculty of Mathematics and InformaticsInterested? Find more information at www.smms.lt or contact us at smms@vusa.lt.
